The computer world can be confusing. There’s many different part options you can pick but there’s one that lot’s of people really get wrong. That’s picking between a hard drive (HDD) and SSD. This blog will compare both and ultimately decide what’s your best option.
Hard Drive
A hard drive is the older technology, it’s also the most popular. It’s got it’s positives and negatives which we will outline in this segment.
Positives:
- Fit more at once – A PC case usually comes with multiple hard drive trays, this allows you to fit multiple of these at once.
- More storage – A hard drive comes with more storage then an SSD. This can usually be significantly more gigabytes.
- Cheaper – A hard drive is usually cheaper, mainly due to the older technology and slower speeds.
Negatives:
- Slower – This is the main downside of a hard drive, it’s slower. Read and write speeds are usually around the 100 MB/s, read the blog further and you will learn how this will compare to an SSD.
- Looks – This isn’t as important, however some people do value aesthetics and hard drives aren’t as beautiful as SSD’s.
SSD
An SSD is the newer technology. We will also outline the positives and negatives.
Positives:
- Faster – This is the main reason people buy SSD’s. They are extremely fast. Read and write speeds are usually around the 3000 mb/s range.
- Looks – We already covered this in the hard drive section but SSD’s are simply more pleasent to the eye. They are also less noticable due to their thin size.
Negatives:
- Fit less at once – An SSD requires a motherboard slot to fit into. Motherboards usually only have 2 maybe 3 slots. Yes, you can use expansion slots however natively you can’t fit as much.
- Less Storage – An SSD usually comes with less storage. Around the price range of a 5 terabyte hard drive you can get a 1 terabyte SSD.
- More Expensive – An SSD is more expensive. It uses newer technology.
Conclusion
If you are an editor, gamer or just value higher speeds and have a larger budget we definetly recommend an SSD. If you prefer quantity, want archives or don’t mind waiting and have a smaller budget we recommend a hard drive.
